More than 30 years ago, inspired by his bike-racing wife, Alan Scholz started his own business, Burley Bike Bags. Mike and his wife, Bev, sold their bags at the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon, 30 miles from their home. Wanting to transport his bags and his young daughter to the market by bike, Alan built a secure, safe bike trailer, the first one being constructed from old swing-set parts. Soon other cyclists wanted to purchase trailers, and before long Burley trailers were being sold in Eugene bike shops. The company became a worker-owned cooperative in 1978, and in 2006 members sold the company to Michael Coughlin, a Eugene businessman and Oregon native who immediately began to focus the business on solely on Burley's core product: the Burley trailer. Burley is known for making the safest, most durable trailers on the road, and more than three decades later, the Burley brand still stands for unparalleled quality. |
